Emma de Guader

Emma fitz Osberne married Ralph de Guader in 1075. She was the daughter of William, one of the King's favourites. The King refused to give consent to their marriage, causing Ralph to conspire and rebel against him. As the King's armies advanced, Ralph left guardianship of Norwich Castle to Emma, whilst he voyaged to Denmark to muster support. Emma resisted royalist forces for three months, but the castle was eventually seized. She managed to negotiate a safe passage for herself and her household back to her estates in Brittany.
